Apparent Efficacy of Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard Programs at Four Naval Air Stations

چکیده

The Department of the Navyimplemented its present mandatory bird-aircraft strike reporting system in 1981. Reported bird-aircraft strikes have increased each year, presumably due to increased awareness and compliance with regulations. Four Naval air stations implementing birdaircraft strike hazard reduction programs in 1984 reported 57-78% fewer strikes in 1984 than in 1983.

Trends in reporting of wildlife strikes with civil aircraft and in identification of species struck under a primarily voluntary reporting system, 1990-2013

in reporting of wildlife strikes with civil aircraft and in identification of species struck under a primarily Executive Summary Reporting of wildlife strikes with civil aircraft is voluntary for airports and pilots but strongly encouraged by the FAA via Advisory Circulars and other activities. In 2009, the FAA undertook a review of the trends in strike reporting from 1990-2008 to determine if ...

The Costs of Bird Strikes and Bird Strike Prevention

Collisions between birds (and other wildlife) and aircraft are known to cause substantial losses to the aviation industry in terms of damage and delays every year. Techniques exist to control bird numbers on airfields and hence to reduce the number of wildlife strikes, but they are applied at widely different levels from airport to airport. Some of this variation may be due to differing levels ...

Crowded skies: Conflicts between expanding goose populations and aviation safety

We here review the collision risks posed by large-bodied, flocking geese to aircraft, exacerbated by recent major increases in northern hemisphere goose populations and air traffic volume. Mitigation of goose-aircraft strike risks requires knowledge of local goose movements, global goose population dynamics and ecology. Airports can minimise goose strikes by managing habitats within the airport...

Fatal injuries to birds from collisions with aircraft reveal antipredator behaviours

Between 1990 and 2008, more than 87 000 bird–aircraft collisions (hereafter, bird strikes) were reported to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and represented more than US$600 million in direct and indirect costs to US civil aviation annually (Dolbeer et al. 2009). Worldwide, the costs to civil aviation associated with bird strikes exceed US$1.2 billion annually (Allan & Orosz 2001). ...
